For an important automotive company we have realized 50.000 magnets to fix two aesthetic flap that divide car’s trunk. The magnet, initially projected in neodymium by customer, have to be positioned inside a plastic housing. Dimensions, 60*30*5 mm with R3 rounded corners, are absolutely binding. Neodymium magnets have an extremely high holding force for this application, over high costs. The single ferrite magnet, on the other hand, has an attraction force too weak to satisfy fastening requested by customer.
Our R&D department has solved the problem putting a ferrite magnet in a steel shell. In this way has been possibile keep the same dimension, realize R3 chamfer as requested, increase ferrite holding force of 10 times. Magnetic assembly is finally inserted inside plastic housing.
We have re-projected and re-drawn a new fastening system keeping the same final dimensions, with a 50% cheaper cost.
